Lead-Based Paint

Lead-based paint was commonly used in homes prior to being phased out in 1978. Lead-based paint is a health hazard, especially to children and pregnant woman, when it deteriorates or becomes disturbed. Once disturbed, this toxic metal can be inhaled in dust or ingested as paint chips or dust contamination. Lead exposure can result in learning disabilities, behavioral problems, and developmental delays in children. Lead exposure can result in kidney issues, reproductive problems, nerve disorders, and high blood pressure in adults.

Millions of homes still have lead-based paint usually underneath layers of more recent paint coatings. Lead-based paint is typically not an issue if it remains in good condition. However, lead-based paint that is deteriorating (peeling, flaking, chalking, cracking, damaged, or damp) is hazardous and requires  repair. Additionally, lead-based paint could be hazardous if it is present on surfaces that children can gnaw on or that are subjected to frequent wear and tear (doors and door frames, windows and window sills, porches, railings, stairs, and banisters).

The Lead Based Paint (LBP) services carried out by FIG Environmental are in compliance with all relevant laws, including the Resource Conservation and Recovery Act (RCRA),  Nuclear Regulatory Commission (NRC), Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD), Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), State and Local Regulations, and the Department of Environmental Protection’s Bureau of Radiation Protection. The HUD standards offer the most extensive national collection of technical protocols, practices, and procedures for testing, abatement, worker protection, cleanup, and disposal of lead-based paint.
